EPIC
A new standard for a new generation, EPIC was created from dissatisfaction of the current Motion Pictures Association of America (MPAA) ratings. Current information states, “The MPAA film rating system is a system used in the United States and territories and instituted by the Motion Picture Association of America to rate a movie based on its content”.
It is one of various motion picture rating systems used to help patrons decide which movies may be appropriate for children and/or adolescents. In a recent deluge of articles against the MPAA, one article from John Nesbit titled, What the MPAA Ratings Really Mean written March 9th, 2001 states, “The simplistic explanations for the MPAA ratings are unreliable and don't tell the whole story”.
Since 1984, the MPAA has remained stagnant in their film-rating process. The ratings given to films are broad-based, inconclusive and without specificity. A growing population is anxious for clarity and specific information. In order to make a concerned and correct judgment for themselves, their spouses and their children, a new system, more broad in scope, is needed.
Thus, in 2006, EPIC was born. Taking serious consideration from major philosophers in what makes a beneficial and positive individual and community, EPIC goes into great detail and discussion about the particulars of each film in the areas of sex/ nudity, violence, and foul language.
These “boiling points” are the main factors in parent’s decisions for film viewing. EPIC is divided into two areas: Ethics and Ratings.
Ethics. Ethics are worth twenty-five percent of the overall Ethics score. They include Virtues, Duties and Consequences. Principles are worth another twenty-five percent and include Rules and Norms. Inspiration is also worth twenty-five percent and includes Positive Attributes and Artistic Bursts. Creativity is the final twenty-five percent and entails New Ideas and Concepts.
This one hundred percent score is graded by three different instructors, qualified in their knowledge of philosophy and how it reflects to individuals and societies.
Ratings. Each area of Sexuality, Violence and Language are given a number from 6- to 21+. In summary, 6- explains that the content is made specifically for young children under the age of six. 6+ would be for children six and above. 10+ would be for ten and above. 14+ would be for fourteen and above. 18+ would be for eighteen and above and 21+ is for twenty-one and above. Each numeral is a quick reference tool so that the adult is able to utilize the information quickly and responsibly.
After a promotional campaign, the information bar present during the advertising, film trailer and presentation film would resemble the following:Standards: S: 6+ V: 10+ L: 10+EPIC Score: 74
Thus EPIC will be able to assist the consumer in making decisions that uphold ethics and principles. Those who are not interested in making such decisions, those who fulfill their own research, and those who view personal and community attributes differently, are not affected by EPIC. However, this new system is designed to replace an outdated system and provide tools that filmgoers want and need.
EPIC, working as a non-profit company, plans to begin this new ratings system internationally, reflecting positive artistic value to the world. We will offer our services nationally and look to attract the Independent filmmaker as a main consumer.
